Jonah and Jennifer

A premature Jonah arrived, as you may remember, in October with a broken spina bifida .  He was in rough shape with fever, infection, and diarrhea.  Shortly after his spina bifida surgery, he developed hydrocephalus, so required an additional surgery.
Thanks to this wonderful local volunteer Jennifer, who opened her home to provide Jonah with aftercare, he is now healthy and is one of our happiest Baobei babies.  Jennifer and her husband, as well as their extended family, have sacrificed so much for Jonah.  They have been completely dedicated to improving his health.
Thanks Jennifer and your family for your commitment to this precious boy!

Baobei’s CNY Baby

A week ago our last child was discharged from the hospital and we were ready to start our Chinese New Year break.

Well, before our break started, we received a very precious “gift” for CNY and we happily give up our break. Her name is Clara. She’s such a sweet and precious 9-DAY old baby. She was born with spina bifida and her sac was broken. We are so thankful that the British International School Shanghai and the Schell family quickly helped us fund her surgery (42,000RMB). Dr Bao will perform her surgery this week. She’s currently in Bed 16, 5th floor of SCMC. Please feel free to visit her during your CNY break.

Natalie with Baby Natalie

Natalie is here visiting Shanghai after graduating from college and deciding what to do next.  She is holding our dear Baby Natalie who had surgery last week.  We’re grateful for people stopping through and helping Baobei as part of their Shanghai experience.  Thanks, Natalie!  Baby Natalie is heading to a healing home soon.  We’re amazed at all the great Shanghai people who want to care for these precious children in their homes.  They are the real heart of our work!

Baby Natalie is such a great little eater and lets you know when she is hungry! She loves to be held and enjoys it when you sing to her. Her hands and feet are always moving… She’s such a very active little girl. Her wound has been healing nicely and will be discharged on Thursday morning. She’s absolutely adorable and melts everyone’s heart!

Phillip’s New Home

About two weeks ago, we left you in our somewhat sad story of saying good-bye to our dear baobei, Phillip.  We pick up today with the rest of the story..
Air China should use Phillip for their new advertising!  Could a boy look any happier?  This is Phillip’s first flight, and boy was he thrilled to be riding on the plane with the experience of feeling so big and above all that was below and seeing the world from a whole new perspective.  Off to Beijing for his longterm care home with hopes for future adoption…
Lily was also enjoying her first flight with Phillip- but with reservation knowing she had to say good-bye to her dear one!
We arrived at Philip Hayden’s Shepherd’s Field home and were met by Dr. Moody.  Phillip JUST HAD TO take a call on the mobile phone though- “Can I hit you back?  The doc needs to chat with me now.” (I think that’s what he was saying in Chinese.)
Shepherd’s Field cares for over 100 orphans (mostly disabled) in their beautiful facilities.  We were especially impressed with how wheel chair accessible everything was- ramps everywhere!  It gave Phillip so much confidence and freedom- buzzing around, discovering many new things.  Please visit their website at http://www.chinaorphans.org/shepherdsfield.php to learn more about their work.
This is Phillip’s beautiful new home.  He’s on the main floor with two other boys sharing his room.
I HATE good-byes, but it helped to leave Phillip with his new buddies by his side and knowing how much he would be cared for by the Shepherd’s Field staff.
I wonder what Phillip’s thinking here…  (I know his friends were thinking, “Come on, let’s get back to playing with all those great toys you brought from Shanghai!”)
Lily stayed with Phillip for another two days to be sure he acclimated well and knew he would always be loved by her and many others whose hearts he touched in Shanghai.

Helen is a Trooper!

Our little Baby Helen has been through so much!  She came to Shanghai for her first hydrocephalus surgery in the spring when a generous Baobei donor provided money for her original shunt.  She was sent back to her orphanage, but over the summer her head started getting bigger.  She returned to SCMC in August and had a new shunt installed.  This shunt seems to be working fine, but the tube that runs from her head to her stomach for drainage has been interfering with her intestines, or vice versa, causing more fluid to collect in her head.  Helen has had two small procedures to try to correct this problem and now seems to be much more comfortable (the pressure on the head for these babies can be so painful!)  Please keep her in your prayers.  She is the strongest fighter and is a real spitfire when she’s feeling well.

Sweet Bella Arrived Last Week

Darling Baby Bella arrived in Shanghai last week.  The hospital is so full right now, her bed is at the end of the hallway with a curtain screen to give her and ayi some privacy.  Bella has spina bifida and is scheduled for surgery later this week.  Look at her chubby cheeks!

What is Spina Bifida? Who is Dr Bao?

I think this video can answer these questions best. It will give you an insight about what Baobei Foundation is dealing with and why we chose to work with Dr Bao and Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. Enjoy the video!

Precious

Mandy is the new born we recently sent to Shanghai for her spina bifida removal surgery. Today I received an some gorgeous photos on this precious one along with some cute info written by Jessica Ling (our medical manager):

“She likes to be held. She has bright eyes and will look at you when you are talking to her. She makes some baby talk, just like she can understand you!! Her neck is strong. She can turn her face from one side to other side by herself when lying on her tummy. she is not fussy, only cries when she is hungry or wants to be held. When she cries, her voice just like a little cute donkey!! LOL!!”

Meeting Our New Baobeis

We have four babies on the 5th floor at SCMC now.  Please visit and bring a small treat for their ayis.  If you haven’t been trained to visit SCMC, please contact Vanessa Whittaker at vanessa@baobeifoundation.org She will meet you at SCMC and show you the ropes.
Meet our dear ones…
Julie is in bed #14.  She is from Jiangsu province and had a small tumor removed from her spine.  She is healing fine.
Christine is in bed #15.  She has been in a wonderful healing home but needed an adjustment to her shunt.  She’s doing great and even sleeps through the night, according to Zhao Ayi!
Jamie is in bed #16.  He is from an orphanage in Henan province and came with a severe case of spinal bifida.  He has had his surgery and is doing quite well.
Charlie is our newest baby, and is in bed # +1 (first room on right hand side when go down hallway).  He is also from Henan province with spinal bifida.  Dr. Bao managed to get his surgery accomplished right away (yesterday), and he is healing now.
We’re still raising money for Charlie and Jamie so please let me know if you would like to help financially.  carol@baobeifoundation.org
We are so appreciative of all you do for these dear ones!
